Fetal heart rate monitor — monitoring of fetal heartbeats

What is a fetal cardiomonitor?

A fetal cardiomonitor is a medical device used to record the fetal heart rate, especially during the last months of pregnancy or during labor. This monitoring provides valuable information about the unborn baby’s well-being and possible signs of fetal distress.

How is the procedure performed?

Monitoring is carried out using a device called a cardiotocograph, which simultaneously records:

  • Fetal heart rate
  • Maternal uterine contractions

Sensors are placed on the pregnant woman’s abdomen, and data is displayed graphically in real time. The procedure is non-invasive and painless, and the patient may lie down or sit in a semi-reclined position during the examination.

Advantages of the method

  • Assesses fetal oxygenation and cardiac activity
  • Detects possible signs of fetal distress
  • Monitors fetal response to uterine contractions
  • Provides essential guidance for the physician during labor

Role of fetal heart monitoring

Fetal cardiomonitoring is essential for assessing the baby’s health during prenatal and perinatal periods. It supports important medical decisions such as initiating labor, continuing pregnancy, or determining the need for obstetric intervention.

Indications for monitoring

Monitoring is recommended in the following situations:

  • High-risk pregnancy (hypertension, gestational diabetes, intrauterine growth restriction)
  • Reduced or absent fetal movements
  • Fetal assessment near term or during labor
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Abnormal findings on ultrasound

Preparation for the test

No special preparation is required

  • It is recommended to eat 1–2 hours before the test to stimulate fetal activity
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the abdominal area

How does the monitoring take place?

  1. The pregnant woman is positioned comfortably on the examination bed
  2. Two elastic belts with sensors are placed on the abdomen (for fetal heart rate and contractions)
  3. Data is recorded for 20–40 minutes or longer, depending on the indication
  4. The physician interprets the graph to assess fetal well-being

This examination provides a clear picture of the fetus’s well-being and contributes to safe and responsible pregnancy monitoring.
