Electrocardiography (ECG) – rapid assessment of heart activity

What is electrocardiography (ECG)?

Electrocardiography is a simple, fast, and painless diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of the heart. Using electrodes placed on the skin, a graphical representation (electrocardiogram) is obtained, providing information about heart rhythm and electrical conduction.

ECG is a routine test in cardiology and can detect a wide range of heart conditions, even at early stages.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. The patient lies on their back in a relaxed position
  2. Electrodes are placed on the chest, arms, and legs
  3. The device records the heart’s electrical activity for a few seconds
  4. The result is obtained immediately as a printed graph.

The procedure is completely non-invasive, does not involve radiation, and causes no pain.

Advantages of the ECG method

  • Rapid diagnosis of acute cardiac conditions
  • Effective monitoring of patients with heart disease
  • Safe and accessible procedure
  • Immediate results, useful in emergency situations

Role of the electrocardiogram

ECG helps the physician identify heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), signs of myocardial ischemia, heart attacks, electrical conduction disturbances, hypertrophy, or pericarditis. It is often the first investigation recommended when cardiac symptoms occur.

Indications for ECG

  • Palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, loss of consciousness
  • Monitoring patients with cardiovascular diseases
  • Cardiac evaluation before surgical interventions
  • Routine check-ups for individuals with risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol)
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of cardiac medication

Preparation for the test

  • No special preparation is required
  • Avoid excessive consumption of coffee, tea, or energy drinks on the day of the test
  • Inform the doctor if you are taking cardiovascular medications
  • Wear comfortable clothing — you will be asked to expose your chest for electrode placement

Electrocardiography is an essential method for assessing heart health, playing an important role in both diagnosis and prevention. At MedFamily, ECG is performed using modern equipment, and results are interpreted by experienced cardiology specialists.
